“Bellow” Red Stag Original Coloured Pencil Artwork

Artist Statement

One of the largest and most iconic of the deer species with their mammoth antlers and bellowing roar, the Red Stag is a feature of the European wilderness and can now be found world wide.  

In Bellow, I sought to capture the commanding energy of the red stag during the rut — a moment when the bush echoes with the deep, resonant roars of dominance and desire. Rendered in coloured pencil, this piece was a labour of both patience and love, with every pencil stroke laid with intention, building layers of rich texture to express the power and presence of this magnificent animal.

The red stag, mid-roar, emerges from the thick grasses, with his antlers heavy and intricate, telling a story of previous battles fought and seasons passed. His muscles are tense, his mouth open in declaration — a depiction of strength and survival.

Bellow is not just a depiction of a stag; it is an invitation to feel the wildness that still pulses in the natural world. It asks us to pause, listen, and connect — to remember that there is beauty in ferocity, elegance in instinct and meaning in the echoes of the untamed.
