FAQ

purchasing

how do I buy an original?

I create as many pieces of artwork as I can and release them individually throughout the year on my website. All pieces will be well advertised before hand via social media, my blog, and on my mailing list. Those who have joined my mailing list will receive a notification of the availability a full 24 hours before anyone else.

Originals tend to go pretty quickly, so if you see something I’m working on that you think you might like, contact me for a preview.

You can see all available originals available here

who actually owns the painting?

I (Jenna Chartrand) retain all rights to all artwork I create. This includes the rights to the image of sold & commissioned original artworks.

I (Jenna Chartrand) retain the right to make reproductions of any and all artwork I create (including commissioned pieces) unless the collector has purchased the full or partial rights to the artwork (this is in addition to purchasing the original).

The collector or buyer may not reproduce the artwork in any way without written permission.

If the artwork ends up being reproduced in a magazine or other media, I request to be credited in the editorial or post.

When you purchase an original artwork you, the Collector, have the right to display the artwork in your home or business but the artwork may not be resold or reproduced without my written permission.

Some collectors choose to purchase my right to reproduce the artwork to ensure it will never become a print. Please let me know if you would like to do this.

framing

The majority of pieces I sell are not framed. It is both more economical and much safer to ship unframed artwork, and the style and colour of framing is a very personal process. Pet portraits and prints are never sold with framing, but are fully matted with backingboard and plastic sleeve, ready to frame.

I do highly encourage framing all your prints and originals.  Not only do they look incredible when they’re professionally framed, but it will help to protect your fresh artwork from wear and dust.

what are limited and open edition prints?

Edition totals are stated on each drawing. Generally, one additional artist proof exists outside this regular run, making the full edition plus one. This will be clearly stated on the certificate of authenticity provided with each print. No further Limited Edition prints are produced outside of the stated edition number. Open Edition prints of smaller sizes may be produced, for example in the production of greetings cards, calendars etc. The artist also reserves the right to reproduce the image outside the Limited Edition in promotional material such as in leaflets, books and magazines.

process . materials . technique

how long does a drawing take?

Capturing a high level of detail and accuracy is a process that can take many long hours of work. A portrait can take anywhere between 30-100 hours, which is spread over the course of a couple of weeks. I only accept a small number of commissions per year, so if your drawing is for a special event (such as a birthday, anniversary or Christmas) I would advise you inquire as early as possible to avoid missing out!

print quality & details

The key to gorgeous reproductions is in the image quality. I scan my original artwork on a flatbed scanner, or photograph with a Nikon DSLR. The accuracy to the original is astounding and the detail is breathtaking.

All limited and open edition prints in my shop are museum quality, Giclee reproductions, printed onto slightly textured 100% archival cotton rag paper. These prints are created using a huge, very fancy printer that uses a wide range of inks.  This achieves amazingly vivid colours right down to neutral subtle black and white tones. All prints are numbered, signed, and shipped to you in a sturdy flat mailer ready to frame.

All reproductions are made in house, and are made to order. Please allow 7-10 days for printing.

what materials do you use?

I use a minimum 200gsm bristol paper for all of my coloured pencil pieces - this paper is tough and acid free (archive qualities).  I use Faber Castell Polychromos coloured pencils, as well as a range of erasers, pencils, electric erasers etc.

When painting, I use acid-free, fully sealed, wooden panels, Golden & Atelier Acrylic paints. All pieces are fully varnished.

commissions

can i order a commission?

Of course you can!

A couple of things to keep in mind: I accept only a limited number of commissions per year, to ensure I have time to complete original paintings for my collectors, as well as continue to allow my creativity to flow and evolve naturally throughout the year. I would suggest booking your commission well in advance, especially if it is for a special event like Christmas or a birthday.

what if i only have limited photos?

Sometimes it's impossible to get new or better photos of your pet - whether they've passed away or if it's a surprise gift for someone else. If this is the case, don't stress - I'm happy to work with the photos you have to create the perfect drawing for you in either case.

when do i pay?

I require a 50% non-refundable deposit to secure your booking and to purchase materials. The remaining balance is due upon completion of the portrait, before the artwork is shipped to you. An invoice will be issued to you through PayPal, which will also include the shipping and handling charge. If you reside in Australia you can make your payment via bank transfer or via credit card. If you reside outside of Australia, all payments must be made via credit card. All dollar amounts shown are in Australian dollars.
