 Last Encounter

Tasmanian Tiger / Thylacine

coloured pencil artwork

It was only once I moved to Tasmania that I learned the tragic story of the Thylacine. A creature so unique but had been pushed to extinction, with a tale that is still relatively unknown outside of Australia. I knew I needed to draw a Thylacine, to have one resurrected in my studio even it was only on paper.

To me, the most important part of my work is to breathe life into my subject. I work in coloured pencil because that slow process of adding layer after layer of pencil strokes gives me time to focus solely on the small details that can often be overlooked; every hair is significant.

For this piece, I didn't want to think of the Thylacine as already extinct. In my mind, she’s amongst the scoporia in the western tiers, wholly unaware of the viewer and the awe she instills upon them. She seems to be waiting for something. Lingering. As if she has spent an entire lifetime amongst those rocks, and is in no hurry to disappear from memory.
